Big News About Movies

Well I went and saw Speed Racer friday night. I was a little surprised to see that the theater wasn’t all that packed. However we got good seats so that was a plus.

Anyways some thoughts about the movie. The movie is definately a kids movie. There is plenty of cheese to go around. If you are going and expecting an Othello expect to be disappointed. The movie IMO starts out a little slow with a bit too much dialogue. However once we get passed all of that and get to the 2nd half of the movie. That’s when all the cool stuff starts to happen.

The actors give a very cartoony performance. Nothing fancy but alot of fun. The kid playing spridle stole alot of scenes with some of his overacting. One of my favorite parts is when they are sitting on the couch and spridle is wearing monkey pajamas and chim chim is wearing boy pajamas. John goodman IMO is always alot of fun and he puts in a fun performance here. Susan Sarandon… well reminded me of when she did the rocky horror picture show. Christina Ricci seemed a bit over chipper, kind of like Trixie from the cartoon. But I guess that was the intention. The guy playing sped racer did a good job. Though I think that my favorite was the guy playing Racer X. I also did like the 2 japanese guys. They reminded me final fantasy. Pretty much all the characters were over the top especially the bad guys.

Whatever the movie lacked, depending on wether or not you couldn’t figure out they were doing that on purpose (it was good to me at least),  in the acting department made up for with it’s crazy ass visuals. I don’t think I could recall a movie with more color in it than Speed Racer. I can’t wait to see this on Blu Ray and a good hd tv. It’s gonna look amazing. The races were very wild and it’s definately “car fu” with all the crazy acrobatics. Even the fight scenes, while a bit cheesy, were entertaining.

All in all I liked the movie. But I’m hearing bad news that the movie only made 20 mill on it’s opening weekend. Not a good thing for a movie that cost 160mill to make. However every kid is going to be wanting this movie. So I expect that dvd sales will make up the rest. I hope the movie does well because it really was alot of fun.
